APSA Annual Meeting 2016
From the 1st to the 4th September, the 112th annual meeting of the American Political Science Association took place in Philadelphia (USA), with the topic "Great Transformations: Political Science and the Big Questions of Our Time." A SESL Research Assistant Daria Kharkina attended this conference.
Artificial Intelligence, Social Networks and Web Technologies
From the 28th of August to the 4th of September, there was held the Summer School and Conference ISMW FRUCT on artificial intelligence, social networks and Web technologies. The staff of our laboratory and the students of the academic program on Sociology attended this Summer School.

Web Science Summer School 2016
Between the 30th of June to the 6th of July, a Web Science Summer School 2016 took place in the University of Koblenz (Germany), focused on the studies of the Internet and social media. Alina Bakhitova, a recent graduate from the second year of her bachelor course "Sociology and Social Informatics”, participated in the work of the school from HESP.
Web Science Summer School 2016
From June 30 to July 6 the Web Science Summer School 2016 was held at the University of Koblenz (Germany). The event was dedicated to the Internet and social media studies. Alina Bakhitova, who is studying Sociology and Social Informatics, took part and shares her impressions of the event.
The Interest to the Chosen Vocation among Students of Colleges and Technical Schools of St. Petersburg
This year, our lab starts holding a regular seminar. On Thursday, the 10th of March, the SELS staff and students gathered together to discuss one of the lab projects.
The Conference on Media Studies
On the 12th of February, the Inter-University Research and Applied Conference of Bachelors, Masters and PhD students took place in Moscow, under the title of “Media research: theory, practice and research perspectives”. Daria Kharkina, a trainee researcher of SESL and the student of the 3rd year program in Sociology at HSE, presented there her talk, "Polarization and Mediator Sites in the News Communities at the Social Network VK".
Studying Virtual Worlds
In the program of the International Students Forum, much attention was paid to one of the most rapidly developing research areas: studies of computer games, the Internet and virtual worlds.On the 4th and 5th February the HSE hosted the International Student Research Forum at the campus on Kantemirovskaya Str.
Students share their impressions of the mini-conference “Social Studies of Games, Internet and Virtual Worlds”
This year, the annual student conference "Sociology in Action" became a part of the International Student Research Forum in St. Petersburg. At this forum, three sections were organized by the SELS staff and students. Our research assistant and student Denis Bulygin is sharing his impressions on one of them, "Social Studies of Games, Internet and Virtual Worlds".
SELS presented the research results at the GESIS Computational Social Science Winter Symposium
The SELS staff and students presented their reports at the GESIS CSS Winter Symposium, which was dedicated to computational social science. The symposium was taking place in Cologne (Germany) from the 1st to the 3rd of December 2015.
