On the 19th of November, the SELS staff and students attended a seminar on the use of instrumental variables. The guest speaker was Viktor Lushin from New York University.
On November 5th, the head of the Laboratory Daniel Alexandrov presented a paper on school differentiation in Russia and parental strategies of school choice at the Institute of Analytical Sociology in Norrkoping (Sweden). The Institute of Analytical Sociology was opened recently at the Norrkoping campus of Linkoping University. The Institute deals with several topics close to the interests of our Laboratory: educational and labor mobility, ethnic segregation, school differentiation and its consequences.
The research of digital and virtual worlds, dubbed social informatics, is an actively developing research area in the Laboratory. Our staff and students have already presented the results of their research at international conferences in Barcelona, Cologne and Helsinki. This year, one of our projects has been presented at a conference in London. Denis Bulygin, an SESL research assistant, has recently returned from the annual international conference CHI PLAY, which took place in London between the 5th-7th of October. CHI PLAY is an international and interdisciplinary conference on “player-computer interaction”, which encompasses all areas of play and games within a broader context of human-computer interaction (HCI).
Between September 10th and 12th, the University of Tallinn hosted a conference on social inequality. The conference was organized by the European Consortium for Sociological Research. Ksenia Tenisheva and Ekaterina Mehnetsova from SESL were among the participants of the conference.
SESL research assistants Darya Kharkina and Denis Bulygin took part in the conference of young scientists, which took place at the Summer School in Information Retrieval (RuSSIR 2015)
This was the 9th year of the RuSSIR, but this time it also included a new topic of graph retrieval, and it was held at a new venue: the new campus of HSE in Kantemirovskaya Str.
ESA, one of the biggest annual European conferences, took place in August 2015. Participating in this event has become one of the SESL traditions. This year, SESL was represented by Vadim Voskresensky and Sonya Semenova, our two youngest members who just recently got their bachelor’s degree.
(Persistent) Inequalities Reconsidered is a conference on the inequality of educational opportunities, which took place in Ascona (Switzerland) from July 26th-31st, 2015. Daniel Alexandrov and Ksenia Tenisheva attended the conference from SESL.
The first results of a new project,' Digital Footprints of Educational Migrations,' were presented at the conference "Education and Global Cities: Prospects of BRICS”.
From June 29th to July 4th 2015, the Summer School on the basics of programming in Python was held in the HSE campus in St. Petersburg. The School was organized with support from SELS for first years students of the Department of Sociology.
The 6th International Scientific Conference of students and postgraduates, "Statistical Methods in the Analysis of Economics and Society”, was held at the Department of Economic Sciences of the HSE on the 12th to the 15th of May, 2015. This year, members of the SELS staff were participating in the conference for the first time.
