The analysis of contemporary standards of scientific citations in articles and qualification papers (diplomas) in sociology and political science was conducted. The project aims to develop methods for the analysis of scientific potential in many countries of the former USSR, and, above all, the potential from the point of view of involvement in the global scientific community and readiness to work and international cooperation at the level of contemporary research.
Systems of Status Symbolism in Academic World
Project coordinator: Michael Sokolov
Systems of symbols of academic status are one of the main components of the entire institutional organization of modern science. Scientists are divided into status groups that have a monopoly on certain positions in the academic labor market (the monopoly of specialists in a certain branch of learning, positions that are available only for those who are not below a certain rank, etc.) and those who claim for recognition and attention to their work. Belonging to the status group is determined by having symbols associated with that position - scientific degrees, citation indexes, publications in periodicals with a certain reputation, "quality" of affiliations and activities, in which X was involved, and so on and so forth.
Teaching Quality Assessment and Academic Ratings
Project coordinators: Svetlana Savelieva, Daria Khodorenko
The laboratory carries out monitoring and developing an original tool for evaluating the quality of teaching in universities. In coordination with the Center for the internal monitoring data about students and teachers is collected. In 2008 and 2009, the Laboratory conducted a survey of students. This study was aimed to describe the main characteristics of contemporary student community on the example of the HSE in St. Petersburg. In 2010, the Laboratory has developed and tested the original method for evaluating the quality of teaching. After conducting a pilot study, this tool can be used to monitor the quality of teaching in other universities. At the moment, design and questionnaire instrument of a new project dedicated to the analysis of the shaping of scientific interests and social networks of students are being developed.
