Research Seminar “Social Networks of Students and Schoolchildren” Was Held at the Laboratory
On March, 20 research seminar "Social networks of Students and Schoolchildren" was held at SESL. Reports were delivered by Dilara Valeeva (LIA ), and Vera Titkova (SESL).
Dilara Valeeva told about the LIA study of social networks of undergraduates. Dilara explained what factors determine the position of student in the interaction network on the case of students of 2nd and 3nd years of the Department of Economics HSE (Nizhny Novgorod). She explained how academic achievement of students and their personal success is connected with the university environment. Coverage of the students was incomplete, about 70% of students of the second and third years were interviewed, however, such sampling allows making some conclusions about the factors of popularity.
Particularly, popularity depends on the student's academic performance, and it reflects the mark received for the unified state exam. State exam is the main criterion for enrollment to college.
The study also was conducted at the HSE in Moscow and among first-year students of the Department of Economics at HSE-St. Petersburg.
Vera Titkova presented the results of analysis of socio-metric popularity factors in the class. The research was conducted on a large sample of schools in St. Petersburg.
She explained what individual and group characteristics contribute to the alignment of networks of relationships between classmates. She also told how these networks relate to academic success, educational aspirations and motivation of schoolchildren.
The audience asked many questions after both reports. Participants shared their impressions and gave some comments. At the second part of the event researchers of both laboratories have shared experience, the preliminary results of research and their achievements. Also the prospects of such studies were discussed.
